In Western Christianity Lectio Divina (Latin for "Divine Reading") is a traditional spiritual practice of scriptural reading, meditation, and prayer intended to promote communion with God and to increase the knowledge of God's word. It is not a theological study of the Scripture passage but

Recently this way of “breaking open” the Scriptures has become popular among many people wish to deepen their understanding how God is calling us to respond in these current times. The constitution Dei verbum of the Second Vatican Council recommended Lectio Divina to the general public and its use in religious orders and among the faithful has continued to spread.

Traditionally, Lectio Divina has four separate steps: read; meditate; pray; contemplate. First a passage of scripture is read, then its meaning is reflected upon. This is followed by prayer and contemplation on the Word of God. The exact methodology can change according to the customs of the group.

Carmelite Media Publications is happy to make these resources from ocarm.org, the website of the Carmelite Order, available free of charge. Feel free to copy and distribute them.
